Fitting coving on curved walls, such as those with bay windows can be a challenge. Some coving materials including wood or MDF can sometimes be bent by prolonged steaming or by making several cuts in the back and gently flexing, but plaster coving is a different matter altogether - it simply won’t bend!
Coving that bends to fit curved walls
Fortunately, technology in the 21st century has come up with an answer. Using the same moulds as for rigid coving, we use a form of rubber latex to create the exact same shape - but bendable. Even if we say so ourselves it is an ingenious solution to an age old problem and one which no other manufacturer has yet been able to provide a better solution for.
The only thing to consider is that, due to the nature of the material, they can only bend a certain amount (pushing it beyond the design limits will cause the profile to start to deform). Each of the flexible coving profiles has a minimum radius, so please bear that in mind when choosing.
Obviously you only need to order the flexible coving for the curved part of your wall - the standard ‘rigid’ lengths are fine for the rest of the straight sections and will match up with the flex without any issue.
How to install flexible coving
When installing flexible coving, use small headless pins of an appropriate length, as the material will naturally want to straighten out. Being headless, the coving material will ‘self-heal’ over the pins, but a small dab of filler or caulk can be used if necessary to cover over any marks that may still be visible. If installing 2 or more flexible pieces, it is recommended to join them together first on a flat surface using the Extra Fix adhesive, before fitting to the curved wall.
Recommended adhesives and paint for coving
You will also need to ensure that you use the appropriate adhesives - Extra Fix for the joins and either a water based (Decofix Pro) or silicon based (Decofix Hydro) one for adhering to the fixing area. The final paint finish is straightforward as the profiles are supplied with a quality undercoat primer. When painting your coving choose an oil based paint, as this has more ‘elasticity’ than a standard water based emulsion and so can absorb subsequent distortions better.
Within our current coving range, the following profiles are available in a flexible format:
Don’t forget that we also offer flexible design patterns in our Cornice profiles as well as dado rails, panels and skirting boards in the same material. All profiles are suitable for use externally as long as the silicon adhesive is used along with appropriate external grade paint.
