Coving & Cornice

Ceilings are often overlooked when decorating a room.  People are often surprised at the transformation and "grandeur" achieved by adding a stylish cornice and ceiling rose.  And becoming ever more popular these days is the trend of uplighting cornice (troughs) that can throw a soft glow across the ceiling, dramatically changing the lighting ambience.

On our site we have probably one of the largest selections of Victorian, Georgian, Edwardinan, Art deco etc coving and cornice profiles available anywhere, as well as our stunning new range of contemporary modern designs that you won't have seen in any other property.

Decor cornice is our premium, handmade and ultimate cornice material.  Tough, strong and lightweight it cuts cleanly and easily for perfect joins making installation as simple as it can possibly be.  The contemporary and uplighter cornices are also made from this same material, with the flexible mouldings made in a rubberised material to enable fitting to curved walls.

Axxent is an extruded polymer material, very tough and strong, similar to Decor, with the same excellent installation properties.  All products come finished with a an undercoat primer ready for direct painting.

All coving/cornice orders over £200 are supplied with our special internal gap tape  measure, free of charge.  Essential for correct and accurate measurements to cut coving without making an expensive mistake.

Selecting your coving

The space in which you live can affect you in many ways, from emotional well being to physical health. For instance, a room with little natural light may make you feel claustrophobic, whereas a brightly lit room may be overwhelming and lead to problems relaxing. Whilst bright colours in small space can often be too busy and make the space feel even smaller. Neutral and pale colours in a large space can make a room feel unfinished and un-lived in.

One way to help prevent a space from becoming over-run or over-complicated by its wall colour, decoration or furnishings is to add coving to the room. This decorative fixture runs around the join between ceiling and wall, making the room feel finished, cared for and lived in. Such an addition can bring a fresh new look to a room, whether the room is for eating in, sleeping in or generally living in.

Although a popular choice in contemporary interior design, coving (or cornice) is rooted in classical architecture with many types and styles of coving based on historical examples readily available today. Originally coving was used to create shadow effects on the wall (or ceiling when up-lit) and although it still has this role, it also means adding further colour and style to a room.

In addition to its decorative role, coving also has a more practical value, allowing a graduation of colour over the wall and to lessen the impact on the eye of two dramatically contrasting colours used on the ceiling and wall.

Of course when choosing your coving the design and style of your room should never be forgotten. A more traditional room, with antique furniture or simple plain furniture may require coving that reflects this understated look and feel. Likewise, minimalist furnishings will look best when accompanied by simple and well painted coving. However, to give a luxurious or extravagant sense of occasion to a room it is worth considering some of the more lavish coving styles on offer.

Any style will create a different shadow on the wall (or ceiling) and it is important to consider how much or little shade or pattern you want to have on show. The variations on the basic styles are numerous, with patterns added or cut away to add egg shapes or blocks at intervals along the coving's length.

Whichever style you choose, once the coving, wall and ceiling are blended and matched perfectly you`ll find choosing the right finishes, furnishings and decorations to complete the work both easy and fun. For instance, pair a Grecco-Roman style coving with roman blinds and mosaic-style tiled flooring, or place a basic coving alongside fresh linen curtains in a bright and bold colour.
